OCTOBER GIVEAWAY 5/31

No one answered the question yesterday, so I guess that prize gets rolled over into today's giveaway.
A spooky prize every day this month to celebrate the upcoming TRANSMUNDANE PRESS release, AFTER THE HAPPILY EVER AFTER.  Featuring authors from all over the world, this anthology explores what happens to fairy tale characters after their roles in the stories everyone knows and loves.  Cinderella, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and Jill, Bluebeard—they're all here, sorting out their lives after the credits roll.
Future posts will include excerpts from the stories, author interviews, and other insider information.
We're launching a kickstarter on October 15th to help pay our contributors a little extra, beef up our marketing, and donate to one of our favorite charities, Scares that Care.  This campaign will feature the official cover release, exclusive stories, more giveaways, and other fun surprises.
Back to our giveaway.

DAY 5 PRIZES:

ANANSI BOYS by Neil Gaiman (paperback).

"Mr. Nancy" — an incarnation of the West African trickster god Anansi — dies, leaving two sons, who in turn discover each other. The novel follows their adventures as they explore their common heritage.

AND
LIVING DEAD IN DALLAS by Charline Harris (paperback).

The second book in Charlaine Harris's series The Southern Vampire Mysteries. This second novel follows the adventures of telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse of Bon Temps, Louisiana, as she is employed by Dallas vampires to use her telepathy to help find their lost companion. Sookie agrees to help investigate the whereabouts of the missing vampire on one condition: any humans found to be involved must be turned over to human law enforcement rather than subjected to vampire justice. In Dallas Sookie Stackhouse has her first encounter with the anti-vampire organization "The Fellowship of the Sun," as well as meeting and learning of the existence of werewolves.

That’s right, two prizes since no one answered yesterday's question in the blog comments or the facebook posts.  Playing pays, so enter to win!
Today's question: Have you ever read a series and got tired of the main character, so much that you stopped reading the series altogether?  If so, let us know which series you walked away from and why.  If there is a series you absolutely loved, let us know which one, too.

Good luck, cats.  Cheers!

  1. Loved SPLIT INFINITY series by Piers Anthony. Couldn't put it down. I read just about everything I can get my hands on.

  2. Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, by Laurelle K Hamilton. I stuck it out to book 12, though I had lost faith in the main character by book 10. Anita had developed from a strong warrior fighting against injustice to committing those same injustices herself with no sense of hypocrisy. I had expected some character development from a monster hunter who finds herself slowly being turned into a monster, but I just couldn't stomach her almost complete loss of humanity. In my eyes, she simply wasn't a hero anymore.

  3. Anastasia Steele in the 50 Shades series. I hate whiny weak female characters. I always feel like it paints women as such dependent creatures. It made sense when I read that 50 Shades was Twilight fan fiction. I set the first book down about 2/3 of the way through and haven't been able to bring myself to finish it. The movie wasn't bad though.

A series I loved was the Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Claire. So many grammatical errors in the first 4 books it drove me crazy, almost to the point of putting them down. But I loved the story and the world she built. The TV adaptation sucks bad unfortunately, but it's not stopping me from reading all the companion series.

  4. Jack Reacher. There comes a point where action characters become caricatures of themselves. He reached it.

  5. Amazing answers. Well done, cats. I got tired of Sookie (books). She drove me crazy to the point where I lost interest. In all honesty, I loved the HBO show, but missed the last two seasons. It held me closer than the novels. *sigh* Good times.
